Who Can Vote?:
A person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in Markham if, on voting day, he or she,

A. resides in Markham or is the owner or tenant of land in Markham, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
B. iIs a Canadian citizen;
C. is at least 18 years old; and
D. is not prohibited from voting under this or any other Act.

A person is NOT qualified to vote for a member of a school board for an area unless the person resides in the area on voting day. This does not apply however to an owner of residential property in the area, or to the spouse of that person.

The Voters' List for the 2006 Municipal Elections will be available for inspection during normal business hours from September 1 to November 13, 2006 at the following locations:

  • Markham Civic Centre, Clerk's Department, 101 Town Centre Boulevard
  • Town of Markham Municipal Election Office, 10 Allstate Parkway, 8th Floor
  • All Town of Markham Public Library locations

Once made available, check the Voters' List and make any additions, amendments or deletions, if necessary. Applications to amend this List may be obtained in person, by mail, or by telephone 905-477-7000, ext. 3695 from the Office of the Town Clerk, Markham Civic Centre and the Town of Markham Municipal Election Office, from September 1 to November 13, 2006.

There are three ways you may make application to amend the Voters' List:

  1. Complete an application to amend the Voters' List (available for download on September 1, 2006). This will ensure that your current information is reflected on the Voters' List at the voting subdivision. To vote ONLINE (November 4 to 9) you must be on the Voters' List by September 29 and must register on line during the registration period.
  2. After September 29, 2006 he/she will be presented an application to amend the Voters' List which must be presented at the Voting Location, during the Advanced Vote or on Election Day, to the Revision Clerk.
  3. On Advance Voting Days or Voting Day. Anyone not on the List can be added or make changes at the voting subdivision, subject to qualification and proper identification being presented.

Voter Identification:
In order to be eligible to vote in the upcoming municipal election, you must, as of Voting Day (November 13, 2006), be:

  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • at least 18 years of age; and
  • an owner or tenant of property in Markham or, the spouse of such a person.

In order to prove Canadian citizenship, if you were born in Canada, you must provide an original of either:

  • Canadian Passport
  • Canadian Birth Certificate (issued in Canada by the province or territory of your birth)
  • Certificate of Canadian Citizenship

If you were born outside of Canada, you must provide one of the four Canadian citizenship documents below:

  • Certificate of Canadian Citizenship
  • Certificate of Naturalization in Canada
  • Certificate of Retention of Canadian Citizenship
  • Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad

The voter notification card is not identification. The card is provided to all electors as notification of dates and times and where to vote on Election Day and during the Advance Voting Period. Electors are requested to bring their card to the poll. The following scenarios will apply at the polling location:

  • If a person is on the list, he or she will be required to provide a photo identification. In the absence, a sworn written declaration will be required.
  • If a person is not on the Voters' List and attends at a voting place, he or she would be required to provide proof of citizenship with photo identification and proof of residency (i.e. tax bill, credit card statement, utility bill). Without that proof, a ballot will not be issued. No sworn written declaration will be accepted.

Advance Voting:
An advance vote shall be held on Saturday, November 4, 2006 and Sunday, November 5, 2006 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Wards 1 and 2 Thornhill Community Centre
    7755 Bayview Ave.

An advance vote shall be held on Monday, November 6 to Thursday, November 9, 2006 between the hours of 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. at the following location:

  • Wards 1 to 8 Town Civic Centre
    101 Town Centre Blvd.

Internet Voting:
Internet voting will only be available to those electors whose names appear on the Voters' List by September 29, 2006 and who have registered during the registration period. Voting Instruction Kits will be mailed the first week of October to all voters on the list.

Internet Voting will only be available during the Advance Voting period beginning Saturday, November 4 at 10:00 a.m. through Thursday, November 9 until 8:00 p.m.
